Pressure Equipment Directive

1. PED Certification Overview:

The Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 2014/68/EU is an EU regulation specifically for pressure equipment, issued to harmonize the pressure equipment regulations of member states and eliminate trade barriers. The old PED Directive 97/23/EC became obsolete in July 2016.

Products exported to EU countries must comply with PED regulations, undergo supervision by third-party inspection bodies, and complete corresponding certification work, including review of design documents, supervision of the manufacturing process, and on-site installation inspection. Meanwhile, manufacturers must provide various documents such as material tests and design manufacturing in accordance with the certification requirements of the PED Directive. These documents must be signed and confirmed by an authorized body before being submitted to relevant authorities for approval. Only after approval can the manufacturer proceed with production.

2. Scope of PED Certification:

The scope of PED certification covers the design, manufacture, and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies with a maximum allowable pressure (design pressure) greater than 0.5 bar (0.05 MPa).

Pressure equipment mainly includes:

Pressure vessels – enclosed spaces containing pressurized fluids.

Pressure piping – connected pipes that are under pressure for fluid transportation.

Safety accessories – devices to prevent pressure equipment from exceeding limits.

Pressure accessories – devices with specific functions and a certain pressure-bearing space.

3. Pressure Equipment Classification:

According to the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 2014/68/EU, pressure equipment is classified into four conformity assessment categories: I, II, III, and IV. The classification of equipment under the PED Directive mainly depends on the following parameters:

• Type of equipment: boilers, pressure vessels, piping, pressure accessories (such as valves, pressure gauges, etc.), safety accessories (such as safety valves, bursting discs, etc.);

• Nature of the fluid (gas, liquid, steam, etc.): divided into two groups based on hazard level. Group 1 is hazardous (flammable, explosive, toxic, etc.), Group 2 is non-hazardous fluids;

• Maximum working pressure: PS (bar);

• Volume or nominal diameter: V (L) or DN (mm);

5. Design Documents Required for PED Certification Review:

Design documents that need to be provided mainly include: General assembly drawing of the equipment, component drawings of main pressure-bearing parts, strength calculation report, etc.
