What is the Measuring Instruments Directive (MID)?
MID is the Measuring Instruments Directive issued by the European Parliament and Council. It is the regulation used by the EU to supervise and manage measuring instruments. The directive specifies the new approach standards for measuring instruments, conformity assessment procedures, and the implementation timeline. The purpose of this directive is to establish a single market for measuring instruments for manufacturers, providing them with a range of conformity assessment pathways to enter the European market. Instruments approved under MID will undergo specific conformity assessment procedures and bear the MID mark, allowing them to be used in any EU member state. The EU officially announced this directive on April 30, 2004, and it became mandatory on October 30, 2006.
From March 31, 2004, to April 30, 2006, all EU member states had 25 months to implement and enforce the MID directive in their countries. The maximum validity period for measuring instrument type approvals is 10 years, starting from October 30, 2006, unless otherwise specified.
