1. What is Fire Testing
Fire testing is primarily used to evaluate the combustion characteristics and fire resistance of building materials, including indicators such as flame retardancy, flammability, smoke emission, toxic gas production, flame and smoke spread. Fire hazards exist in building materials such as walls, ceilings, doors, windows, floors, coatings, and pipes, making scientific testing essential to mitigate risks.
With the normalization of building material exports, companies must not only meet Chinese national standards (GB) but also understand international standard systems such as those of the EU, the US, Australia, Canada, and Japan to ensure smooth market entry.
2. Comparison Table of Building Material Fire/Flame Retardant Testing Standards
3. Common Fire Test Classifications
Non-combustibility test: Determines whether a material is combustible under a standard fire source (e.g., ISO 1182, GB/T 5464).
Flame retardancy test: Measures the burning behavior of materials under a small flame (e.g., ISO 11925-2, GB/T 2408).
Flame spread test: Observes the speed of flame propagation along the material surface (e.g., ASTM E84, BS 476-7).
Heat release rate (HRR): The heat released when a material burns, a key indicator of fire spread (ISO 5660, ASTM E1354).
Smoke density and toxicity: Evaluates smoke concentration and toxic gas release (ISO 5659-2, GB/T 20285).
Fire resistance integrity: Tests the load-bearing capacity and integrity of building components such as doors, walls, and floors under high temperatures (ISO 834, EN 1363, ASTM E119).
4: Enterprise Application Recommendations
Domestic market: Strictly adhere to GB/T and GB standards, with a focus on GB 8624 classification and corresponding product standards.
Export to the EU: Focus on EN 13501-1+EN 13823 and provide Euroclass rating reports.
Export to the US: Prepare key reports such as ASTM E84+UL 723.
Export to the Middle East/Africa: Most adopt ISO standards or the EU system.
Export to Russia and the Customs Union: Must meet EAC certification (TR 043/044), which includes fire safety requirements.
Summary:
The fire testing standard system for building materials is extensive, but the core concepts are combustion performance + fire resistance + smoke toxicity. When addressing domestic and international markets, companies should select corresponding standards based on the target country's regulations and plan testing and certification in advance to avoid returns or delays during customs clearance or customer inspection.
