PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) refer to substances that contain at least one fully fluorinated methyl (CF3-) or methylene (-CF2-) carbon atom (not connected to any H/Cl/Br/I atoms). These substances are characterized by persistence, long-range migration potential, toxicity, and bioaccumulation.
Evidence shows that PFAS cause global pollution to the environment, wildlife, and humans, accumulate in the human body, pose a direct threat to human health, and are exacerbating the biodiversity crisis.
Applications: Waterproofing, oil resistance, stain resistance, chemical resistance, temperature resistance, reducing surface friction, achieving surface activity, etc. Due to their excellent properties, they are widely used in the electronics and electrical industry for materials and components such as semiconductors, wires and cables (insulation), cable assemblies, printed circuit boards, etc.
1. Scope of PFAS Testing Products
Textile fabrics/outdoor clothing
Food contact materials (food packaging, takeout containers)
Automotive/electronic components/cables
Water treatment materials, firefighting foam
Packaging materials/plastic/coatings
Detergents/cosmetics
2. What Substances Does PFAS Cover?
All substances that meet the PFAS structural definition are classified as PFAS. This includes not only small-molecule substances like PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, C9-C14 PFCA, but also PFAS polymers such as PTFE, PVDF, etc.
3. PFAS Testing Standards
European Union:
EN 17681-1:2025 (latest 630 items)
EN 14582 (total fluorine screening)
EU REACH Regulation ((EC) No 1907/2006)
EU POPs Regulation ((EU) 2019/1021)
United States:
Toxics in Packaging Clearinghouse (TPCH) Model Legislation
State-level PFAS bans in the US
ASTM D7359
China:
"Guidelines for the Control of Key Chemical Substances in Consumer Products"
PFOA and PFOS in GB 9685 "Standard for Uses of Additives in Food Contact Materials and Articles"
GB 31604.49-2016, which specifies limit requirements for PFAS in food contact materials.
4. PFAS Testing Methods:
Fluorine Element Screening
Total fluorine screening for high-risk materials, covering all fluorine-containing substance tests. Convenient, cost-saving, with limitations on total amount. Combined with MSDS, total fluorine, and extractable organic fluorine.
Targeted PFAS Testing
Targeted PFAS testing for precise quantification, basically covering small-molecule PFAS, meeting mandatory regulations and customer control requirements. Complex testing, expensive, with limitations on the number of substances.
5. Are There Exemptions in the EU's PFAS Control Proposal?
The proposal includes exemptions for PFAS in certain application scenarios, including polymerization aids, specific-use textiles and impregnating agents for re-impregnation of such textiles, refrigerants used under special conditions, cleaning fluids used in specific environments, firefighting foams, diagnostic laboratory tests, anti-corrosion/corrosion prevention hydraulic oil additives in special systems, insulating gases in specific switches, lubricants in specific equipment, reference materials for measuring instruments, etc. Relevant parties are revising the previous proposal, so the formal control requirements may adjust the exemption part.
