1. Introduction to AS/NZS ISO8124 "Australia and New Zealand Toy Safety Standard":
AS/NZS ISO8124 standard is based on ISO 8124-1:2009 with additional national amendments for Australia. It specifies general safety, structural, and labeling requirements for children's toys, as well as test methods.
The standard aims to reduce potential hazards to children during both intended use (normal use) and unintended use (abuse) of toys. It applies to children under 14 years of age.
2. AS/NZS ISO8124 "Australia and New Zealand Toy Safety Standard" Test Items:
| Standard Number | Test Content |
|
AS/NZS ISO8124-1 |
Two aspects: safety requirements for toy structural characteristics (such as shape, size, contours, gaps, etc.) and parameter requirements for certain toy performances (such as maximum kinetic energy of projectiles, minimum angle for ride-on toys). It should be noted that child anthropometry provides reliable data for toy safety physical quantities. For example, various probes with cranks simulate bendable fingers of different age groups to check toy gap sizes to prevent children's fingers from being pinched. |
|
AS/NZS ISO8124-2 |
Toys must not constitute a flammable hazard in children's environments. The standard identifies four categories of toys: clothing worn by children, toys children can enter, toys children hug, and children's masks. Flame spread speed is determined based on the time a child carries, drops, or leaves a burning toy. For example, commercially available plush stuffed toys fall under the hugging toy category, with flame spread speed not exceeding 30mm/s. |
|
AS/NZS ISO8124-3 |
Specifies maximum limits for transferable harmful elements (antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, selenium) in toy materials and components. The standard describes the element analysis process in an interesting way: scraping paint from the toy surface, crushing it (simulating a child biting with teeth), mixing with hydrochloric acid (simulating stomach acid), placing in a 37°C incubator (simulating body temperature), shaking for one hour (simulating stomach digestion) before chemical analysis via spectrometry. |
3. AS/NZS ISO8124 Testing Process:
1) Fill out the test application form;
2) Determine test age group: under 3 years or all ages.
3) Provide test samples;
4) Arrange testing;
5) Issue test report.
