1. 1935/2004/EC Testing Introduction:
1935/2004/EC is a regulation concerning materials and appliances that come into direct or indirect contact with food. Materials exported to the EU that come into contact with food must comply with the relevant standards of 1935/2004/EC.
The new regulation No. 10/2011 took effect on May 1, 2011. It brings plastic layers in multilayer composite materials and plastic materials and articles with printing or coatings under regulatory scope for the first time; it also introduces migration limit requirements for heavy metals such as barium, cobalt, copper, iron, lithium, manganese, and zinc in plastic materials and articles. Additionally, the regulation updates migration testing requirements based on recent EU research data, modifying the concentrations and types of some food simulants, and specifically adding test requirements for simulants for dry foods. For metal/metal alloy materials, the previous 7 heavy metal release tests have been expanded to 21/23 heavy metals: Ag, Al, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Sn, V, Zn, As, Ba, Be, Cd, Hg, Li, Pb, Sb, Tl, (Ti, Mg). The new regulation is now CM/Res(2013)9.
