1. Introduction to DM 21/3/73 (Italian Food Grade):
The Italian regulation applicable to materials in contact with food is "Italian Legislative Decree No. 777 of 1982", which covers the Ministerial Decree 21/3/73 and its subsequent updates, serving as the legal requirement for food contact materials.
2. Structure of Italian Food Grade Regulations:
Italian Legislative Decree No. 777/1982
To demonstrate compliance with the decree requirements, Ministerial Decrees provide legal technical specifications:
Ministerial Decree 21/3/1973
Ministerial Decree 4/4/1985
Ministerial Decree 18/4/2007
etc.
3. Materials Covered by Italian Food Grade and Specific Regulations:
| Material | Regulation |
| Plastics | DM 21/3/73 & amendments |
| Ceramics | DM 4/4/1985 & 84/500/EEC |
| Tin | DM 18/2/1984, DM no. 243 of 01/6/1988 |
| Stainless Steel, Carbon Steel, Cast Iron | DM 21/3/73 & amendments |
| Rubber | DM 8/2/1995 & 93/11/EC |
The Italian Food Grade requirements for plastic materials align with EU Directive 2002/72/EC. Additionally, the decree includes specific national requirements, such as for rubber, silicone, glass, and stainless steel, which are outside the scope of EU regulations but are specifically addressed in the Italian decree.
Italy has established an approved list of stainless steel materials: only materials listed can be used for food contact purposes, and they must meet purity standards, pass food contact testing, and comply with requirements specified in DM 21/3/73.
