1. Vibration testing is conducted to evaluate the ability of components, parts, and complete machines to withstand expected transportation and usage environments. Depending on the environment the product is exposed to, vibration testing can be categorized into the following types:
(1) Single-Frequency Sinusoidal Vibration Test
A sinusoidal vibration test performed at a selected frequency (which can be a resonance frequency, specific frequency, or critical frequency) at a specified level for a defined duration.
(2) Swept-Frequency Sinusoidal Vibration Test
A test performed over a specified frequency range at a defined level, sweeping from low to high frequency and then from high to low frequency as one sweep cycle, repeated until the total required number of sweeps is completed.
Swept-frequency tests are divided into linear and exponential sweeps:
Linear sweep rate is determined by the sweep speed (Hz/s) or single sweep time;
Exponential sweep rate is typically one octave per minute.
(3) Narrowband Random Sweep Test
A test performed over a specified frequency range using narrowband random signals at a specific center frequency and bandwidth, sweeping from low to high frequency and then back, for a specified duration.
(4) Broadband Random Vibration Test
A test performed over a specified frequency range using broadband random vibration with a defined spectral shape and total root mean square (GRMS) value for a specified duration.
(5) Broadband Random with Superimposed Sinusoidal Vibration Test
A test performed over a specified frequency range by superimposing several sinusoidal vibrations on top of random vibration, at specified levels and for a defined duration.
(6) Broadband Random with Superimposed Narrowband Random Sweep Vibration Test
A test performed over a specified frequency range by superimposing several narrowband random peaks on top of broadband random vibration, at specified levels and for a defined duration.
