Amazon Packaging Transportation Testing
Amazon Packaging Transportation Testing

The purpose and significance of packaging testing lie in enhancing the reliability of product packaging, verifying whether the packaging can achieve the expected results. The testing encompasses multiple aspects, including packaging transportation testing (ISTA), box structure, paper quality, environmental protection (hazardous substances, recyclability), among others. Various international regulatory bodies and standards govern these areas.

The most common packaging test is "Packaging and Transportation Testing (ISTA)," which aims to ensure products reach their destination safely. Laboratory simulation testing provides a simple, fast, effective, and low-cost method to evaluate the performance of packaging protection designs under actual use conditions. Tested packaging can guarantee compliance with various national standards regarding stability, environmental friendliness, recyclability, and other metrics.

To prevent damage to goods caused by environmental and transportation factors, the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) first advocated for improving transport packaging quality and developed a series of standards. As an ISTA member, Amazon collaborated with ISTA to establish two test standards: ISTA 6-Amazon.com-OB (Over Boxing) and ISTA 6-Amazon.com-SIOC (Ships in Own Container), regulating packaging requirements for products sold on the Amazon platform.

Amazon categorizes packaging into three tiers (Tier 1–Tier 3) and further subdivides them by product type into Over Boxing and Type A through Type H, totaling 9 test types.

Tier 1: Frustration-Free Packaging (FFP)

Tier 2: Ships in Own Container (SIOC)

Tier 3: Prep-Free Packaging (PFP)

Amazon requires that, except for exempted products, all items sold on its platform must undergo either ISTA 6 SIOC testing (for Tier 1 FFP or Tier 2 SIOC shipments) or ISTA 6 Over-Boxing testing. After obtaining a qualified ISTA 6 test report, sellers must register on the Amazon platform to gain approval for the FFP program packaging certification.
